The fallout from last week's historic bankruptcy of one of the world's biggest shipping lines, Hanjin Shipping, continued with little resolution with as much as $14 billion worth of cargo stranded at sea according to the WSJ, sending cargo owners scurrying to try to recover their goods and get them to customers. Since Hanjin's bankruptcy protection filing, dozens of ships carrying more than half a million cargo containers have been denied access to ports around the world because of uncertainty about who would pay docking fees, container-storage and unloading bills. Some of those ships have been seized by the company’s creditors. As Bloomberg adds, 85 Hanjin ships that have been effectively marooned offshore as ports in the U.S., Asia and Europe have turned the company’s ships away. The worry is that Hanjin ships won’t be able to pay port fees or their contents might be seized by creditors, which would disrupt port operations. The global shipping disruption comes just as companies are shipping merchandise to fill shelves and warehouses for the end-of-year holiday season.

President Obama has extended Bush’s Proclamation 7463 for the 16th consecutive year, giving him broad powers over the organization of the military for at least another year. Among them: the ability to call up the national guard and deploy those troops overseas. As of last week, 16,345 guardsmen remain called up under the legal authority involved by that proclamation, the Pentagon said. The emergency also gives the president — and his successor — the authority to “suspend the operation of any provision of law relating to the promotion, involuntary retirement, or separation of commissioned officers” of the armed forces. And he can appoint an unlimited number of new one- or two-star generals, waiving promotion requirements and legal limits on the number of officers. Wednesday, GOP candidate Donald Trump suggested he would use his authority as president to replace top generals, saying he would seek the advice of generals on the Islamic State, but “they’d probably be different generals, to be honest with you.” Under the National Emergencies Act, national emergencies expire after a year, unless the president renews them by notifying Congress. Obama did just that last week. Congress is also required to meet every six months to consider whether to revoke each state of emergency. 1. We don't know how the hijackers got into the cockpits of some of the planes
2. Passengers and crew aboard the planes provided critical information
3. Light passenger loads made it easier for the hijackers to maneuver
4. Missing hijacker made it easier for United 93 passengers to storm the cockpit
