NEVADA AX THE TAX UPDATE

The Nevada Supreme Court has scheduled oral arguments for May 2nd on the Big Gaming/Sandoval appeal of the district court decision green-lighting the citizen referendum on the gross margins tax passed by the Legislature last year.

If we’re lucky, we may get a decision and final approval by the end of May.

The drop-dead date for turning in signatures is June 21.

Talk about cutting it close!  However…

As I pointed out to State Controller Ron Knecht in a call about the effort yesterday afternoon, the Nevada primary election will be held one week BEFORE the deadline to turn in signatures.  And in 2012, the last primary election in a presidential election year, almost 200,000 voters turned out.

To qualify the referendum on the margins tax, supporters need about 55,000 signatures.

And while I recognize that it would be a “Hail Mary,” it’s not out of the question that referendum supporters could get more than enough signatures on primary election day alone if a grassroots, volunteer signature-gathering effort is highly organized and flawlessly executed.

I know…a big *if.”  But remember…it ain’t over ‘til it’s over.

Cheers.
