1. Patriot Act Renewal Action Happening Fast: See What's Coming Up by Josh Withrow
Set to expire at the end of May, Section 215 of the USA PATRIOT Act is only one of a number of authorities the government uses to defy the 4th Amendment and spy on millions of Americans without a direct warrant. Nevertheless, its upcoming sunset date provides defenders of liberty a strong chance to make serious move back towards our founders’ intention that:
“The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.” Read more here...

2. Here's How the NSA is Trying to Get Kids Interested in a Career in Spying on Innocent Americans - by Jason Pye
The National Security Agency rolled out a website for kids featuring nine anthropomorphic characters and games and activities aimed at teaching children about gathering signals intelligence. There's even a link that directs high school and college students to information about programs at the NSA, as well as what careers are available at the controversial agency.
Dan Raile of Pando.com attended a cyber security conference last week in San Francisco and obtained aCryptoKids Fun Book, basically a coloring and puzzle book featuring characters that appear on the kid-themed website. "Is it strange that the NSA, which takes such care to stay out of the public eye, should be so keen to capture the attention and aspirations of the young?" asked Raile. The book has a link to the NSA's kids website. Read more here...

4. Capitol Hill Update, April 27, 2015 - by Josh Withrow
House & Senate/Schedule: Both House and Senate are in session this week. The House will take recess next week, while the Senate remains in session through Memorial Day week (May 25).
Legislative Highlight of the Week: The House and Senate are both in conference to reconcile differences between their respective budget proposals for Fiscal Year 2016. Both chambers are reporting that they are close to an agreement, and a vote on the conference report could happen this week. This budget resolution is more crucial than normal, as it ought to contain reconciliation language that could be used to send a repeal of much of ObamaCare to President Obama's desk. For more on why this reconciliation tactic is so crucial... Read more here...
5. Another West Virginia County Cracks Down on Testing Opt Outs by Logan Albright
A couple of weeks ago, I wrote about a county in West Virginia was trying to intimidate students who wanted to opt out of the standardized testing mandated under Common Core standards. Despite assurances from the State Superintendent of Education that there were no consequences to students for opting out, schools were fearing a loss of funding, and therefore overreacting to parents exercising their rights by singling out and pressuring students to comply.
Unfortunately, it seems the situation has gotten worse. The Superintendent in Harrison County, one Mark Manchin, has gone public with his anti-opt out position. Read more here...

7. The FDA Continues Its War on Consumer Choice - by Logan Albright via Watchdog.org
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA), having long served as the gatekeeper of the American medical industry, is setting its sights on increased regulation of homeopathic medicine, a form of extremely diluted drug marketed under the theory that “like cures like” and popular in alternative medicine circles.
Homeopathy has been lightly regulated for much of its history, and suppliers are currently allowed to sell their products (which conventional science says are almost indistinguishable from water) over the counter with minimal government interference. All that may be about to change, however, as the FDA mulls over the idea of treating these products in the same way as real – excuse me – conventional drugs. Read more here...
