1. Common Core for Higher Ed - by Logan Albright
Last month, president Obama quietly put forward a new plan to establish a rating system for colleges and universities, designed and overseen by the U.S. Department of education, which would then be used to determine funding levels for these institutions. It’s the continuation of a worrying trend of more federal involvement in education that includes No Child Left Behind, Race to the Top, Common Core Education Standards, Head Start, and the president’s new scheme to make the first two years of community college free. Read more here...
2. No, John Boehner is Not "the Most Anti-Establishment Speaker" in History - by Jason Pye

Just two days after facing an historic uprising within the ranks of his own House Republican Conference, Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) defended his four-year record as the lower chamber's presiding officer, telling reporters that he is "the most anti-establishment Speaker" in history.
On Tuesday, 25 brave House Republicans expressed a desire for new leadership in the chamber by voting against Boehner's reelection as Speaker. This was, according to the Congressional Research Service, the biggest challenge to a sitting Speaker since 1923, when Frederick Gillett faced opposition from progressives in the House, including members of his own Republican conference. Read more here...

4. The FEC's Internet Gag Rule - by Matt Kibbe & Jenny Beth Martin via The Washington Times
In the time leading up to the Battles of Lexington and Concord, American patriots had, for almost a decade, gathered near the Boston Common in the shade of a majestic elm tree to share their grievances about the king’s government.
Those patriots eventually took for themselves the name “Sons of Liberty” and their gathering place became known as the Liberty Tree until 1775. Then, with Boston under siege by the British, a party of crown loyalists (reportedly led by a man named Job Williams) cut down the Liberty Tree and turned it into firewood so the patriots could gather there no more. Read more here...
5. IRS Drains Bank Accounts of Innocent People by Logan Albright
The practice known as Civil Asset Forfeiture is getting more attention these days, and deservedly so. Americans need to know that there is a legal mechanism for the government to empty their bank accounts, even if they haven’t been convicted or formally accused - of a crime. Read more here...
6. Rejecting Keystone XL Pipeline Will Backfire on Democrats - by Tom Borelli
With the holidays over the stage is set for the Keystone XL pipeline to be the first political battle of 2015, pitting the lame duck President Obama against the new Republican-led Congress.
The political posturing over approval of the pipeline that would bring oil sand crude oil from Canada to refineries in Gulf Coast states began shortly after the midterm elections. Read more here...
7. Obama's Community College Power Grab - by Logan Albright
Update: White House Deputy Press Secretary Eric Schultz has announced that the expected cost of the proposal will be $60 billion over the next decade, a number that seems wildly unrealistic to the present author based on the math below.
In the run-up to his State of the Union Address, President Obama is advancing a bold new proposal for education. He wants to make community college free for the first two years for students who are willing to “work for it.” Of course, by “work for it” he means “not completely fail,” setting the extremely low bar for eligibility of a C+ average and half (half!?) time attendance. Read more here...
