Federal judge orders IRS to explain lost emails

A federal judge on Thursday ordered the IRS to explain under oath how it lost a trove of emails to and from a central figure in the agency's tea party controversy. U.S. District Judge Emmet G. Sullivan gave the tax agency a month to submit the explanation in writing. Sullivan said he is also appointing a federal magistrate to see whether the lost emails can be obtained from other sources.

Obama books vacation on Martha's Vineyard

President Barack Obama has booked a two-week summer getaway for his family on the picturesque Massachusetts island of Martha's Vineyard. The White House says Obama will head north on Aug. 9 and stay until Aug. 24, when he returns to Washington. It will be the longest summer vacation of his presidency.

National Gay Pride Blood Drives are taking place throughout the country on Friday to increase blood donation, while calling for removal of a federal ban that prohibits blood donations from men who have had sex with other men since 1977 -- when the AIDS epidemic began.
