NEWS ON MOUNT REAGAN

Two new co-sponsors of Rep. Joe Heck’s [R-NV] bill to name a peak on the top of Frenchman Mountain east of Las Vegas after President Reagan: Rep. Richard Nugent [R-FL11] and Rep. Morgan Griffith [R-VA9].

Also, Carolyn Lochhead of the San Francisco Chronicle did a story on the Reagan Legacy Project - founded by our friend Grover Norquist of Americans for Tax Reform - and our part in that project here at “Mount Reagan,” Nevada.

“Conservative activist Grover Norquist wants to name 3,000 things after Ronald Reagan. His next target is a small mountain in Democratic Sen. Harry Reid's home state.”

BROKEN CLOCK GETS IT RIGHT

There’s an old saying that even a broken clock is correct twice a day.  Likewise, once in a while the Democrats end up on the accurate side of an issue.  Thus it is in their observations Friday on Republican lieutenant governor candidate Mark Hutchison’s debate performance last week…

“Unfortunately for the self-entitled ‘Anointed-One,’ when he puts all his resources into controlling what might be the shortest fuse in Neveda politics, he apparently forgets that annoying thing called ‘the truth,’ and, well, his company’s website.  And court documents.  And Google.

In Monday’s debate, when Hutchison insisted he was not a ‘personal injury lawyer,’ Lowden responded by pointing out Hutchison ‘employs personal injury lawyers.’  Hutchison followed up by making the blatantly false statement. ‘I don’t employ personal injury lawyers.’

Oh, really?  As Jon Ralston pointed out, Hutchison’s firm not only practices personal injury law, it boasts of it on its website.  Ralston further highlighted in yesterday’s Morning Flash that Hutchison’s firm ‘specializes in it[personal injury law] and his partners brag about their expertise and he’s listed as a firm that does the work.  Oh, and he’s also listed as a lawyer in auto negligence cases a decade and a half ago.’

So, to summarize:

Hutchison says he is not a personal injury attorney, and doesn’t employ personal injury attorneys.  The reality is Hutchison does employ personal injury attorneys.  As the owner of the firm, Hutchison does subsequently profit off of personal injury lawsuits, and has himself served as a plaintiff attorney in auto-negligence cases.

To be clear, what is at issue here is not Mark Hutchison’s firm specializing in personal injury lawsuits.  The issue is: Hutchison lied.  And when presented with proof he lied and given the opportunity to apologize, his campaign doubled down with a response that was as nonsensical as it was intellectually dishonest.  And factually dishonest.  And, well, a lie.

Here is the key takeaway from Hutchison lying about his business background:  if he can so casually lie about something so easy to disapprove, what else is he hiding from Neveda working families?

If you think that’s bad, here’s what one of Hutch’s biggest supporters, Art Gisi, wrote in an email on Saturday

“The Firm of Hutchison and Steffen employs 38 attorneys and takes cases in 21 different areas of law. True enough 1 of the areas listed is Personal Injury and there are 8 attorneys listed in that category.”

So forget the Democrats.  Even Hutch’s staunchest supporters are telling everyone he lied!

And in light of the above, the endorsement that follows should come as absolutely no surprise to anyone…

2014 ENDORSEMENT FOR LG

Citizen Outreach PAC announced its first primary election endorsement yesterday, backing conservative Republican candidate Sue Lowden in the hotly-contested lieutenant governor race against moderate, establishment-backed state Sen. Mark Hutchison.

There’s a lot that can and has been said in this race, especially about her opponent’s decidedly lousy voting record in his one and only session as a state legislator – including three votes to implement ObamaCare, his vote to extend the $620 million worth of “temporary” tax hikes that should have expired three years ago, his proposal to tax mining up the wazoo, his vote to implement the federal government’s Common Core curriculum standards, his vote to give driver’s licenses to persons in this country illegally…and especially his refusal to co-sponsor the campus carry bill.

But all of that aside, the fact is Hutchison is a longtime personal injury lawyer with absolutely no experience or expertise in tourism and economic development whatsoever - which happen to be the primary duties of lieutenant governor as per our state Constitution.

On the other hand, Lowden – a former state senator and former Nevada GOP chairman – is not only a well-established conservative who has donated thousands upon thousands of dollars to Republican candidates, organizations and causes over the last 20 years, but has over 35 years of direct involvement in the state’s gaming and tourism industries.

While her opponent has the most money and establishment backing, Lowden is not only the more conservative candidate in this race who has been endorsed by the Nevada Republican Party, the Carson City Republican Party, the Nye County Republican Party (see below) and Veterans in Politics, she’s the best qualified.

This one should be a no-brainer for the informed Republican primary voter.

AND THE ENDORSEMENT HITS JUST KEEP ON COMIN’

Sue Lowden, the non-establishment-backed GOP candidate for lieutenant governor, also received the unanimous endorsement of the Nye County Republican Party over the weekend.

That means of the three GOP entities that have opted to endorse in the primary this year – the Nevada, Carson City and Nye GOPs – Lowden has earned all three seals of approval.

Nye’s backing is particularly meaningful, as Nye is “Ron Paul Central” and naysayers have been predicting for months that Lowden would have a tough time getting support from those folks due to the brouhaha that erupted at the 2008 Nevada GOP convention.  Looks like those concerns have been completely overblown.

Because of the money advantage and establishment backing of Hutchison, Lowden still has to be considered a huge underdog in this race.  But it’s become pretty clear that among the most involved Republican grassroots activists for whom philosophical principles matter, Lowden is the clear choice.

We’ll just have to wait until June 10 to see if that reality trickles down to low-information GOP primary voters.

FAMOUS LAST WORDS

"In 2006 and 2008, the Republican Party was slaughtered; the GOP was on the endangered species list. One more bad election and the GOP would have taken its place as a minor party, with only slightly more members than the Flat Earth Society.  Then came the Tea Party. The Tea Party saved the GOP.” – Judson Phillips
