Big labor unions behind demands to double fast food wages
image On Labor Day 2013, organized labor is showing some oomph. Here's one reason union members are marching: "Organized labor recognizes that low-wage service jobs are replacing better-paying manufacturing jobs, and people have to rely on them to make ends meet," said Gina Chiala, a Kansas City lawyer and board member of the Midwest Center for Equality & Democracy, which works to organize low-wage workers.

Obama's Syria bombing measure faces tough going
image President Obama's resolution to OK bombings against Syria is unacceptable, key lawmakers said, as the administration began a drive for congressional approval. "I know it will be amended by the Senate," Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy, D-Vt.

Baby shot to death in stroller on NYC street
image A 1-year-old boy being pushed in a stroller by his parents was shot in the face while crossing a city street and later died. No arrests have been made. Antiq Hennis and his parents were walking across a street in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn at about 7:20 p.m. Sunday when shots were fired and the boy was struck, police said.

image The tawdry sexual dancing of Miley Cyrus on the 2013 edition of MTV's Video Music Awards has been denounced by nearly everyone -- conservatives, liberals and libertines (who flunked it for lacking "hotness"). That theme is exhausted. Let's shift the discussion back to where it belongs: the cultural cesspool that is MTV.

Obama Punts

But President Barack Obama's abrupt decision to instead ask Congress for permission left him with a high-risk gamble that could devastate his credibility if no action is ultimately taken in response to a deadly chemical weapons attack that crossed his own "red line."
