DAMASCUS AND THE BIBLE - TRUMPETS SOUNDING?

The Syrian Crisis
By Ron Branson

There is much discussion on the crisis in Syria on the news of the day. Since Bible prophesy discusses Syria in the later days, I considered it appropriate to speak my mind here. While I know that many hold respect for my knowledge and words, I also know that when it comes to Biblical prophecy, many hold differing views than myself, as even some of my trusted friends differ with me. I accept the challenge.

First, I wish to cover where we are politically as the United States. Barack Obama has asserted that he will be making a "limited" attack upon Syria with or without Congress's permission. The U.S. Constitution grants power to Congress to decide when America shall be committed to war, Article 8, Sec. 11, to wit; "Congress shall have power ... to declare war." Should Congress make a declaration of war, it shall be the president who shall lead such war declared by Congress, Art. II, Sec. 2, to wit; "The president shall be commander in chief of the army and Navy of the United States." There is no authority provided within the U.S. Constitution for the president to initiate war without permission from Congress.

This above Constitutional provision has been ignored since the Second World War, and the Office of the Presidency has acted in this respect as a monarch, as no war since the Second World War has proceeded by a declaration of war by Congress, but initiated by decisions of presidents. Hence, Obama's seeking a declaration of war is a first since the Second World War. The question Obama faces is, what if Congress chooses not to got to war with Syria. Obama say he will then go it alone!

Certain Congressmen and Senators in favor of Obama say that if Congress does not vote for war, it will cut into the credibility of Obama as the reason why Congress must support Obama in his war against Syria. These Congress Members are recognizing that Obama has given the "Red Line" ultimatum" and must now follow through with his war, or he will look impotent.

Now let me touch upon the Word of God respecting Syria. God has described the final destruction of the capital of Syria, which is Damascus, in Isaiah chapter 17:1, "The burden of Damascus. Behold, Damascus is taken away from being a city, and it shall be a ruinous heap." We are instructed that with with the destruction of Damascus, it shall cease to be a kingdom, "The fortress also shall cease from Ephraim, and the kingdom from Damascus." "And behold at eveningtide trouble; and before the morning he is not." In other words, tension shall exist the evening before Syria's destruction, and within that night it shall be destroyed, and in the morning the capital of Syria shall be wiped off the face of the earth and shall be no longer. It appears Syria will be destroyed by some sort of nuclear missile.

Now we do not know who or what nation shall be behind this total destruction of Damascus, but no matter who, this destruction of Syria shall greatly affect the Nation of Israel, as they border Syria.

Also in the news this week is coverage of the hopes of establishing a Peace Covenant between the Nation of Israel and the Palestinians, which Peace Accord is being discussed by Secretary of State John Kerry on behalf of Obama.

Soon there will be the observance of Rosh
Hashanah (Head of the Year), which is the Hebrew New Year, also known as the Feast of Trumpets as described in Leviticus 23:23-24. Rosh HaShanah, 2013 will start this year on Thursday, the 5th of September and will continue for 2 days until Friday, the 6th of September. There shall be during this time a series
of the blowing of trumpets with the holding of the sounding of the last a trump being blown only at the first appearance of the sliver of the new moon from the geographical position of Jerusalem, which day and hour cannot be forescene, and thus remains unknown every Rosh Hashanah of each year.

Is the current crisis in Syria the final one as described in the Bible as to the total destruction of Damascus? That I cannot tell. But as I pointed out at the top of this article, since the Bible addresses the final destruction of the capital of Syria to be accomplished through the night, it appears to hit the nail on the head. Surely the handwriting is on the wall and very near, even at the door.
