RedState Briefing 08/21/2013

Morning Briefing
For August 21, 2013

1.  #DontBlink — Defund It
I am in the minority among my closest friends. Most of my friends are, as they are expressing on twitter and elsewhere, appalled at Heritage Action for America, For America, and soon other groups running targeted ad campaigns against various Republicans in Congress.

The ads are designed to remind voters that those members of Congress and Senators have campaigned against Obamacare, but now will not vote to defund Obamacare.

My friends believe these conservative organizations are doing great harm and will potentially hurt Republicans. They find them off putting, likely to do more harm than good, pushing a strategy doomed to fail, and putting Republicans in a no win position.

I myself intend to give For America and Heritage Action money so they can keep the ads going.

I understand my friends’ position. My concern is not that these ads harm our side, but that the ad buys are too small. I think our side has been harmed by Republicans campaigning since 2010 against Obamacare, passing symbolic vote after symbolic vote to show just how much they hate Obamacare, then putting themselves in a position to actually be able to do something to stop it and punting on it. . . . please click here for the rest of the post

2.  Oregon To “Rehabilitate” Businesses Opposed To Gay Marriage
There is a new case in the never ending war waged by homosexual activists on people of faith. . . . please click here for the rest of the post

3.  Losing Family, Losing God, Losing the Country
John Adams once said, to the chagrin of libertarians through the ages, “Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.”

Indeed, many of the problems we see manifested in our nation today, from the refusal of the president and attorney general to enforce the laws of the land to the Supreme Court finding a right to sexual perversion, have their genesis in the fact that it has become déclassé among the self- described elites to look upon religion as anything other than a curious practice engaged in by proles.

How did we get to this point where we have a government that is fundamentally hostile to religion and religious expression? Where we have a president who repeatedly defines Freedom of Religion as a much more narrow Freedom of Worship? . . . please click here for the rest of the post

4.  Obama’s small business rubber stamp not so good at paying taxes, debts
In revelations that would be comical if they weren’t so predictable (and true), President Obama’s top small business advocate really is keeping it consistent with the administration he backs. . . . please click here for the rest of the post

5.  How pathetic is the Christian Nation alt-history?
This pathe… what’s that? Oh, Christian Nation is this new, steadily-bombing alternate history that’s been out that takes as its change point John McCain winning the election (yeah, I know), then conveniently dying in Russia two months into his administration (yeah, I know) and leaving Sarah Palin to somehow idiot-savant, evil-genius her way into creating an American theocracy (YEAH, I KNOW) over the next twenty years. Because writing and publishing this tripe is apparently cheaper than undergoing therapy for irrational fear of Protestant Christians. . . . please click here for the rest of the post

6.  Interior: Keystone XL Pipeline will impact “cultural soundscapes” and “high quality night skies”.
As part of the State Department’s review of TransCanada’s proposed Keystone XL Pipeline, 1.2 million comments have been received from interested parties including environmental groups and the public at large. The Department of the Interior has commented too, expressing concern that TransCanada’s impact during construction and during pipeline operation will disrupt the “cultural soundscapes” and “high quality night skies” at national parks and recreation areas distant from the actual route.
