MUTH'S TRUTHS 05/28/2013

DRIVE-BY MUTHINGS

Heading north this morning for a brief visit to the Nevada Legislature to witness the debacle as it winds down (see next item), and then over to Oakland, California for a two-day visit with our new BFF, Dr. Ben Chavis, to personally visit his award-winning, super-spectacular charter schools…that the local school board is closing down.

Film at 11…

ASSEMBLY GOP TO FOLD HOLDING FOUR ACES

With a week to go in the 2013 session, Republicans in the Assembly hold all the cards…but if history is any guide, we can expect them to fold the minute it comes time to bet without even looking at their hand.

In a Las Vegas Review-Journal story this morning, it was again noted that none of the GOP’s most important reform bills – including construction defect reform, public employee benefit reform, prevailing wage reform and school voucher reform – have been given so much as the time of day.

But here’s the thing…

The governor’s entire budget depends on re-imposing some $620 million worth of higher taxes…a bill that requires a 2/3 super-majority to pass in the Assembly.

And if the 15 Republicans there stick together, either the $620 million will need to stripped out of the budget (a good thing!) or Democrats will have to give Assembly Republicans something big and significant (a better thing!) to avoid a stalemate and possible special session.

It just takes balls (like Republicans in 2003 had)…and a little leadership to pull the troops together to form a united front.  Indeed, they need do no more than pick their one hill/bill to die for and draw a line in the northern Nevada desert sand.

Alas, Republicans in the Assembly are so used to being sad-sack losers that now, when they are most relevant and have the most power at their very fingertips…they’ll once again fold like the proverbial cheap suit.

These people respond to power politics and negotiation the way vampires respond to sunlight.

They are Charlie Brown and the Bad New Bears going up against Bryce Harperand the Washington Nationals.

This is Pee-Wee Herman vs. Mike Tyson.

Mark SureWould vs. Michele Fiore.

Indeed, when all is said and done next week, our intrepid Assembly Republicans will have once again given the governor and the Democrats that $620 million tax hike without so much as a whimper.

And they will once again return home whining about how none of their bills got passed and how crappy it is to serve in the minority in the Legislature…even though their fate was in their own hands and their pathetic, miserable condition was self-imposed.

But then again, I’m sugarcoating it.

Makes you proud to be a Nevada Republican, huh?
