If you think the dead tree industry is making a comeback, just look at the Washington Post. In one year, the operating loss went from $21 million to $53 million. Oh, and of course circulation was down.
Then note that advertising revenue for the newspaper dropped another 14% in the past year. Does anybody believe this is a newspaper that will be able to withstand the economics of being a press release center for the White House and Democrats?
“Daily circulation went down nearly 9 percent over the previous year, and Sunday circulation was down about 6 percent: “average daily circulation at The Washington Post totaled 471,800 and average Sunday circulation totaled 687,200,” the release said. The release does not break out circulation revenue.”

The LA Times, has been cutting reporters, editors and columnists. Now it is cutting back on sports stories and even the TV grid. It is death by a thousand cuts. This is a paper that may not have a will to live—like most in the United States, it is unable to meet the needs of a 24/7 news cycle, cable TV, the Internet and the public feeling the newspaper is biased.
At some point it will become a local paper, leaving national, statewide and international news to other sources. Like the Patch papers found online, it will report local crimes and trends and news business openings.
