SILVER STATE CONFIDENTIAL 10/30/2012

FIRST FRIDAY HAPPY HOUR THIS WEEK

First Friday Happy Hour this Friday, November 2 from 5-7 pm at Tommy Rockers.  This will be the last First Friday Happy Hour before Election Day!

Tommy Rocker’s is located just west of the “Strip” at 4275 Dean Martin Drive. Take the Flamingo Road west exit off I-15 then left on Hotel Rio Drive and right on Dean Martin and you’ll see it. If you’re coming from Tropicana, head north on Dean Martin Drive and it’s right before the Flamingo Rd. overpass.

OPERATION IRRITATION

And the winner is…

The third message of our “Operation Irritation” billboard project will go up starting tomorrow.  The winner of the online survey of donors to the project was: "Are You Better Off Now than You Were $4 Trillion Dollars Ago?"

Coming in second place in your balloting was: "A Taxpayer Voting for Obama is like a Chicken Voting for Col. Sanders!"

We raised enough money to run this fourth billboard through the end of the week, but could use a few more dollars to keep both up all the way through Election Day.  So if you haven’t kicked in a few shillings to irritate liberal commuters yet, click here for more information and the link to make a contribution.

CHUCK’S PICKS: CLARK COUNTY COMMISSION

Clark County Commission, District A:  I like Barry Herr, the Republican challenger.  And I believe him to be a good conservative.  But I also believe he’s snake bit when it comes to picking seats to run for.

Herr ran for State Controller in 2010 against perhaps the most competent Democrat on the ballot that year.  This year he’s challenging incumbent Democrat County Commissioner Steve Sisolak.

As a member of the University Board of Regents, Sisolak demonstrated a decidedly independent streak and placed a pretty high value on accountability.  He was nobody’s rubber stamp; a trait he’s carried over to the county commission.

In fact, he’s done something that our own Republican Gov. Brian Sandoval is scared to death to do: Take on the public employee unions over their collectively bargained wage and benefit packages that are bankrupting government.  And Sisolak didn’t just take on any ol’ government workers’ union; he took on the FIREFIGHTERS’ union.

That takes serious cojones.

Such independence and boldness ought to be encouraged and rewarded in our public servants and elected officials.  On the other hand, if the unions succeed in making Sisolak pay a price at the ballot box for his willingness to fight them head on, it will paralyze every other wimpy elected official who even thinks of looking at the government employee labor bosses cross-eyed.

Sorry, Barry.  I like your thinking and philosophy...but once again wrong race, wrong place.  I gotta go with Commissioner Sisolak for re-election on this one.

Other Chuck’s Picks:

Clark County Commission District B: Ruth Johnson
Clark County Commission District C: Craig Lake

HELP WANTED

The best hope for conservatives in the state Assembly for next year is Republican Phil Regeski who is challenging Democrat Assemblyman Paul Aizley in District 41 in Clark County.  This is a swing district that Phil’s going to need a strong GOTV effort to win…and the campaign has some money to pay “sign wavers.”  If you’re interested or need more information, contact Dan Burdish at (702) 582-6089 or danburdish@gmail.com

CHUCK’S PICKS: CLARK COUNTY JUDICIAL RACES

None of the Supreme Court candidates face an opponent…so you either vote for the incumbent, vote for “None of the Above” or leave that race blank.  I don’t have a strong sense or opinion on any of these races.  All incumbents will be retained, so I haven’t spent any time looking into them.

As for the other judicial races on the Clark County ballot, I am NOT an expert. So what I did was reach out to six attorneys I know who are solid libertarian-conservatives to get their opinions on these races.

Now, bear in mind, these folks are NOT rating these judicial candidates just on party registration or even political philosophy, but competence, as well.  Remember, Elizabeth Halverson was a Republican!

So here are my semi-informed picks based on the recommendations of conservatives involved in the system on a day-to-day basis whose opinions I trust:

District Judge, Department 4: Kerry Early
District Judge, Department 5: Carolyn Ellsworth
District Judge, Department 14: Adriana Escobar
District Judge, Department 20, Jerry Tao

Yes, I know Tao used to work for Harry Reid…and believe me, that gave me pause.  But NO ONE I’ve spoken with about Judge Tao has had a bad thing to say about the guy.  Seriously, the impression I get is not to be surprised if he changes water into wine right up there on the bench before your very eyes!

Justice of the Peace, Las Vegas, Department 1: Deborah Lippis
Justice of the Peace, Las Vegas, Department 5: Bill Jansen
Justice of the Peace, Las Vegas, Department 8: Amy Chellini
Justice of the Peace, North Las Vegas: Kalani Hoo
Justice of the Peace, Moapa: Tony Terry
Justice of the Peace, Mesquite: Ryan Toon
Justice of the Peace, Laughlin: Tim Atkins

FAMOUS LAST WORDS

“(Democrat congressional candidate John) Oceguera's not the worst candidate on the ballot, but he certainly is the worst major-party candidate to run for a competitive federal office in Nevada in at least eight years. . . . But when you really think about it, Oceguera is the perfect representative of the Democratic Party: a union-loyal foot soldier who moved up the party ranks by doing and voting as he was told, who was rewarded with a candidacy in a winnable race over more worthy party rivals. He's a product of a top-down structure that values obedience over merit.” – Columnist Glenn Cook
