SILVER STATE CONFIDENTIAL 10/24/2012

SANDOAVAL ADVISER: OBAMA WILL WIN NEVADA

Anjeanette Damon of the Las Vegas Sun reports that in an interview on "Nevada Newsmakers" yesterday, Pete Ernaut, a senior political adviser to Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval predicted that President Obama will win Nevada by between 1-3 percentage points.

Folks, you may not like that message, but the messenger didn’t just fall off a turnip truck last night.  Pete is a savvy, well-respected longtime political operative in Nevada.

And while I have been quite critical of Gov. Sandoval for how little he’s done on the campaign trail for local and state Republican candidates this election cycle, Damon points out that the governor has been pretty much AWOL on behalf of Mitt Romney, as well.

“Sandoval is one of the most popular politicians in the state, but has been largely absent from Romney’s campaign trail, a conspicuous absence given Romney’s tough fight in one of the country’s most critical battleground states.  Sandoval appeared at one early-season rally with Romney, but hasn’t acted as much of a surrogate for the campaign.”

Talk about leading from behind.

THIS DON’T LOOK GOOD

The initial turnout numbers from early voting in Nevada should have the GOP establishment in near panic.  It’s that bad…and all the spin in the world can’t change the math, especially all the reactivated “inactive” Democrats who have cast ballots.

Here’s what RalstonReports reported late last night after Day 4 of early voting:

“Democrats extended their lead by another 5,000 ballots in Clark County; it's now at 23,000-plus. Republicans had a slight edge in Washoe. Turnout is huge - 121,000 in four days.”

Nevertheless, GOP operatives responded this morning with a memo that essentially says: “Move along, nothing to see here.”  Indeed, the email boasts of “GOP momentum” in absentee and early voting in Nevada despite the raw numbers.

Color me skeptical.  I’ve heard these “rosy scenarios” before.

Folks, if - Allah forbid - Nevada ends up a political killing field for Republicans on November 6, a whole lotta heads of a whole lotta consultants and operatives who have been paid a whole lotta money to run this ship into the iceberg should roll.

And they won’t be able to blame the tea party folks or the Ron Paul folks.  Because the highly-paid, stand-for-nothing “professionals” who know-it-all have completely ignored, blown off and circumvented the Republican Party regulars, choosing instead to create a “shadow” GOP operation and out-source voter registration and get-out-the-vote to out-of-state third-party organizations and consultants.

Which brings me to…

LAME-O MAILERS FROM…WHERE?

I received three political mailers yesterday.

One promoting life, marriage and religious freedom; urging “The Muth Household” to “vote early” for NEVADA Republican candidates.

A second urging us to “Join (NEVADA) Gov. Brian Sandoval and support Mitt Romney & Paul Ryan” because, says Gov. Sandoval, “Romney-Ryan will stand up for Nevada’s seniors.” (Typical DC cookie-cutter political flapdoodle saying absolutely nothing).

A third - again from NEVADA Gov. Sandoval - tells us he “stands with America’s comeback team,” Romney-Ryan.

And get this revelation revealed in the mailer: “Brian Sandoval knows America needs a real recovery.”

Really?  REALLY?  America needs a real recovery?  And Brian Sandoval knows it?  Who writes this crap?

The mailer also informs us that Romney-Ryan supports…get this…”More Jobs” and “More Take Home Pay.”

But hold on, Bubba-looey.  The mailer also declares: “That’s a plan Brian Sandoval can support.”

Really?  REALLY?

Considering Brian Sandoval pushed a $620 million tax hike last year that included a huge increase in the payroll tax - which even Nevada’s most vocal liberal has called a “job killer” - as well as higher sales taxes and car registration fees that REDUCE a family’s take home pay, one has to question the governor’s bona fides on this particular issue.

But here’s the real kicker…

Guess who paid for and mailed all three of these lame mailers to my NEVADA address urging my NEVADA household to vote for NEVADA Republicans and Romney-Ryan in NEVADA?

The NEVADA Republican Party?

Nope.

The IDAHO Republican Party!

Could this get any more embarrassing?

PARTY HEARTY WITH THE LIBERTARIANS!

The new-and-improved Nevada Libertarian Party, under the direction of Libertarian National Committeeman Brett Pojunis, has launched a campaign to double its membership.  And as political soulmates of conservatives (Ronald Reagan: "I believe the very heart and soul of conservatism is libertarianism"), that’s not a bad thing - especially considering how many Gumby Republicans we have here.

Anyway, to kick their effort into high gear the LP is hosting a happy hour (!) event this Friday, October 26 at 5:00 pm at the Dal Toro Italian Ristorante – which, if you’ve never been there, also boasts “one of the most impressive luxury, exotic and rare car collections under one roof.”  Dal Toro is located inside The Palazzo on the Strip.

And in addition to featuring both the party’s presidential and vice presidential candidates, the event will include stand-up comedian Doug Stanhope, political satirist and radio hostKennedy, professional boxer Ron “The American Dream” Johnson, Survivor reality TV starRupert Boneham and author/Austrian economist Walter Block.

Whether you join the LP or not, this sounds like it’s gonna be an awfully fun event - especially for right-thinking political junkies.  So, of course, I’ll be there!  And I hope to see some of you there, as well.

FAMOUS LAST WORDS

“…(N)onpartisan voters - that's what we call independents here in Nevada - have out-registered Republicans. That's right: In every single month since February, more voters have signed up as ‘nonpartisan’ than have signed up as Republicans. And that's true notwithstanding the fact that Republicans were actually trying to register voters, while nobody was knocking on doors or setting up tables outside grocery stores seeking to add nonpartisans to the rolls.” – Columnist Steve Sebelius
