I STAND WITH ALEC
For those of you who attended the Conservative Leadership Conference two weeks ago, you’ll recall the remarks by Ron Scheberle relating to the left-wing attacks against his organization, the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC).
“Occupy Wall Street”-type agitators have been pressuring corporate sponsors of ALEC to drop their membership through online petitions. Problem is, a handful of major corporations HAVE pulled their support in recent months.
Now, it’s arguable whether or not it’s because of the lefties online pressure campaign (probably not, in most cases), but they’re taking credit for it anyhow. Which is why Grover Norquist and I set up a companion online petition website in SUPPORT of ALEC.

I DON’T STAND WITH POTUS
A developing national story line is that Democrat members of Congress are skipping the Democrat National Convention this year because of President Obama’s unpopularity. Indeed, at last count there are no less than five Democrat U.S. Senate candidates who have announced they will bypass a trip to Charlotte this summer.
The problem is growing so big that the head of the Democrat Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) said yesterday that all Democrat candidates who want to win should stay away from the convention. “I don't care if the president was at 122 percent favorability right now,” warned Rep. Steve Israel. “I think they should be in their districts.”
Now…if Republicans were smart, they’d organize it so that every GOP member of Congress and every GOP congressional candidate would be at the Republican convention in Tampa this August on Day One at a special event to show united support for Mitt Romney. What a contrast that would be.
POLITICAL POTPOURRI
* The Associated Press reports that Apple computer has decided to open a facility in northern Nevada thanks to of a package of about $89 million worth of tax abatements which analysts predict will be a “79 percent reduction in the company’s tax burden.” And some pig-headedly still say low taxes don’t attract economic development and corporate relocations?
* Republican Senate District 13 candidate Kathy Martin is the latest to ink the Taxpayer Protection Pledge. She’s running against Democrat Debbie Smith, an incumbent assemblywoman who voted for over a billion dollars worth of “temporary” tax hikes in the last two sessions.
* Assembly Democrats this week rolled out a set of economic proposals supposedly geared to getting Nevada’s economy going again. Here’s all you need to know about how serious the proposals are: Las Vegas Review-Journal reporter Ben Spillman writes that the plan includes “few specifics and no cost estimates.” In other words, pure political theater. All sizzle, no steak.
* The Committee to Protect Nevada Jobs filed a lawsuit yesterday against the "Education Initiative" (margin tax initiative) charging that that the initiative's Description of Effect is deceptive and incomplete and that the initiative violates the single-subject rule. Which it clearly does. Let’s hope the court tosses it.
