RHODE ISLAND BECKONS ILLEGAL ALIENS

RHODE ISLAND MAKING LIFE EASIER FOR ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS

Since taking office in January of this year, Rhode Island Governor Lincoln D. Chafee has reversed direction when it comes to fighting illegal immigration in his state. Rather than embracing the vigorous campaign against illegal immigration, Chafee ditched the E-Verify system to check workers’ status, revoked the State Police’s authority to enforce federal immigration law, and granted in-state tuition rights to illegal immigrants. Gov. Chafee even wants to give illegal immigrants driver’s licenses. Chafee said that harsh policies against illegal immigration were alienating the state’s Latino population, which has grown more than 40 percent in the past decade. Next on Chafee’s to-do list: a path to U.S. citizenship for those here illegally.
