AZ's SB 1070 Reduced Immigration-Related Crimes
SB 1070 has officially been in effect for one year, and the parts of the law that have been in effect for the past year, are working. The Department of Public Safety says it has made a difference in the border battle, even in its stripped down version. There are fewer violent crimes and it has helped DPS’ immigration task force do their jobs better.
From January to March last year, the task force busted 12 drop houses - this year during the same months, only three. Likewise, last year agents arrested 33 smugglers, and this year it is down to 12. Officials credit the portions of the bill that allow for more serious charges against traffickers for the success and for ending the “revolving door” policy which allowed illegal immigrants to be deported without charges or penalties to re-enter the country and continue committing crimes.
DPS Capt. Fred Zumbo says immigration violence is moving on to other states and their office now receives the most calls from Houston, Denver, and Las Vegas asking for help in how to deal with the bloodshed.
